Karl Urban, for his part, still wants a Dredd sequel

According to Indiewire, Karl Urban recently took to Twitter to say he’s open to playing Judge Dredd again. Urban starred as the ever-constipated law enforcer in a 2012 film that, despite a low score from The A.V. Club, mostly garnered praise from critics. However, the film’s poor box office returns seemed to squash any opportunity for a sequel, something even writer Alex Garland admitted outright last year.

However, the film’s diehard fans have started a petition to continue the story of Mega City One via another film, or maybe even a TV series on a premium channel or streaming platform. The petition states:

We call on TV and movie producers to step up to the plate and give us more, either through a pay-to-view TV series or a new movie! … With the success of series such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Man in the High Castle, the clamor of the growing fanbase for more from the incredible world of the 2012 Dredd movie cannot be ignored.

That last part is debatable, but if another version of Urban’s Dredd is ever made, Netflix and Amazon do seem like appropriate homes for the high-concept shoot ‘em up.

And, apparently, Urban thinks so too:

But even with a star eager to dive back in, a lack of mass appeal will always prevent a project from getting off the ground (just ask Ron Perlman). It’s pretty unlikely that TV producers would be any more willing than movie studios to throw a bunch of money at a sci-fi concept that most people aren’t passionate about. Then again, Three’s Company is getting a big-screen reboot, so who knows?
