Kate Beckinsale plays Jane Austen’s Lady Susan in this trailer for Love & Friendship

Trailers for goofy comedy movies tend to have a similar feel in their trailers. There’s a little bit of setup for the plot at first, and after that it’s just a series of disconnected jokes that show off the best parts of the movie with little or no context. Then it ends on a solid zinger and the audience is left with fond memories of the good laughs they had during those two minutes. Interestingly, this trailer for Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship—which is based on Jane Austen’s Lady Susan—has a similar feel. Instead of straightforward jokes, though, it’s bursting at the seams with dry, British wit and clever observations about the ways that men and women behave around each other. The film stars Kate Beckinsale as Lady Susan herself, with Chloë Sevigny playing her best friend and Morfydd Clark as her daughter Frederica.

Love & Friendship will be in theaters on May 13.
