Kathleen Hanna and friends return with new The Julie Ruin album, single

Three years after the release of Run Fast—its first album as a proper band, as opposed to a one-woman project—The Julie Ruin has announced a new album, Hit Reset. Led by ex-Bikini Kill frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, The Julie Ruin reunites Hanna with her former bandmate (and riot grrrl heroine in her own right) Kathi Wilcox, along with guitarist Sara Landeau, drummer Carmine Covelli, and Kenny Mellman of drag duo Kiki and Herb. The five-piece has also lined up a pair of festival dates for this summer in New York City (July 23 at the Panorama festival) and Atlanta (August 12 at the Wrecking Ball festival).

To accompany the announcement, the band has released the first single from Run Fast, “I Decide.” A propulsive ode to self-determination, “I Decide” features Landeau’s almost Sonic Youth-esque guitar swirled together with Mellman’s synth keyboards in between the singalong choruses we’ve come to expect from Hanna, all driven by Wilcox’s assertive bass line. You can hear “I Decide” in a new lyrics video—starring Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield and filmed during this year’s SXSW—below.

Hit Reset will be released on Hardly Art records on July 8, and you can pre-order it here.
