Kathryn Bigelow to direct Broadway-themed drama Miraculous Year

Last night’s Tony Awards—which made a heroic bid for your attention by handing out trophies to the likes of Denzel Washington, Scarlett Johansson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, American Idiot, and sound designer Robert Kaplowitz—reserved the bulk of its accolades for John Logan’s Red, which took home Best Play and Best Lead Actor for star Eddie Redmayne, among many others. Logan’s success has apparently not gone unnoticed by HBO, which has tapped him to reunite with Redmayne for the drama pilot Miraculous Year, to be helmed by The Hurt Locker’s Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow.

Miraculous Year follows Terry Segal, a “charismatic and self-destructive Broadway composer and lyricist,” as he deals with his upper-class New York family and the demands of his new show, which would feature Redmayne as “a captivating and sexy singer/dancer.” Frank Langella is said to be in talks to join the cast as Segal’s famous painter father, while Hope Davis may sign on as his sister, a corporate lawyer tired of living in his shadow. Broadway vet Patti LuPone may also join the cast as a “diva.” How this tale of footlights, familial dysfunction, and bourgeoisie blues will play in the hands of Bigelow’s typically kinetic visual style should be interesting to see. And on a related note, when are they finally going to bring Point Break Live! to the Great White Way? (It can’t do any worse than The Addams Family.)
