Katy Perry will judge the rebooted American Idol
ABC’s American Idol reboot is coming whether you want it or not, and has already landed a big pop star to serve as a judge. During the network’s upfront presentation Tuesday, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey revealed that Katy Perry has joined the team. “Katy is a superstar and fantastic addition to the long list of great Idol judges,” Dungey said. “Get ready for a bold new American Idol next season.” Earlier in the day, Dungey told press that this incarnation of the competition will be distinct from the Fox iteration.
“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories,” Perry said in a statement. “I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough—from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”
Last week, NBC helped American Idol alums Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson achieve similar goals, by hiring them as coaches for its rival singing competition, The Voice.
