Kaz: Bare Bulbs
Kaz has been a staple of the underground (or "alternative") comics (or "comix") scene since the early '80s. In that time, he hasn't refined his technique or slickened his storytelling style one iota. The main change that has occurred since he began is that the comics-reading public has evolved to the point where his vision has become more accepted. Kaz's cartoon world, as seen in his weekly strip Underworld, is clouded with abstract images of junkies, mean kids, effete midgets, uglies, and cartoon-character favorites who have been wrung out and hung up to die. Rather than stabbing at any semblance of realism, he lets absurdity run rampant: Consequently, the characters in Bare Bulbs are subjected to all manner of cartoon mayhem and destruction, fully aware that they can never die, and that they exist solely for the gag. In nearly every case, the gag pays off. Kaz has a sensibility that is funny without being obvious, dynamic without being distracting, and hip without being smug.
