Echoing recent comments made by co-star Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves told MTV that he’s game for making a third Bill And Ted film if “it’s a film that could stand up on its own,” and you know, not just pander to ever-more-fervent Gen-X nostalgia. As you can see in the below interview, Reeves says they're "trying," and that he’s talked to Winter as well as original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon about the possibility, and that he’d “love to play the role” that, some would argue, he’s basically been playing for most of his career anyway.
As for what shape that film would take, both he and Winter have long suggested that they’d like to revisit Bill and Ted as “adults”—and at an L.A. screening a few weeks ago, Winter even suggested that they “had ideas that even children wouldn’t be able to see the movie.” Here, Reeves jokes that he'd like to do a "3D black-and-white" anthology uniting directors like Scorsese, Coppola, and Herzog—whom Reeves does a pretty fair impression of—in time for the film's 25th anniversary in 2014, by which time Reeves (and thus Ted) will be 50 years old. Whether this gritty, potentially adults-only tale of Bill and Ted—which one can only hope would have a scene dealing bluntly yet sensitively with the death of George Carlin’s Rufus—will ever see the light of day, in any form, is obviously still up in the air, but considering how much talking Reeves has done about it lately, don’t be surprised if it starts taking shape soon.
