Keira Knightley in talks for Barbra Streisand-directed Catherine The Great biopic
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keira Knightley is currently in talks to star in a biopic of Catherine The Great directed by Barbra Streisand. Actually, the talks have apparently been going on for a while, as THR notes that Knightley initially took meetings about the project last year and things have been “progressing slowly” since then. (Hopefully the movie itself will be less boring than that sentence makes it sound.)
The script for this biopic was written by Kristina Lauren Anderson and was featured on 2014’s Black List, which means it’s probably pretty good. The story reportedly focuses on Catherine The Great—born Sophia Augusta Fredericka—as she “finds herself trapped in an abusive marriage to inept ruler Emperor Peter III and eventually uses her intelligence and cunning to rise to power.” She would also go on to become Russia’s longest-ruling female leader, though this biopic probably won’t go into that unless it’s really going to follow her whole life and end with her dying after having a stroke while on the toilet.
