Kenan and Kel are hungry for a Good Burger sequel

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell were Nickelodeon royalty once upon a time, a kid-friendly comedic duo that seemed inseparable. Alas, time and circumstance pulled the All That collaborators apart, with Thompson going on to become Saturday Night Live’s longest-running cast member, Mitchell sticking with Nickelodeon, and rumors of some nebulous strife swirling between them. Whatever beef remained was squashed in 2015, when the pair popped by Fallon to resurrect their shockingly enduring “Good Burger” characters, a move that doubled as a soul-warming reunion.

On a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Thompson revealed that the pair have stayed in steady contact since they reconnected—earlier this year, for example, they squared off against each other on a Double Dare reboot—and, more excitingly, are both down for a sequel to the Good Burger movie they made in 1997.

“We’ve been talking about it for a long time. We’ve had meetings about it, so it’s in the higher powers’ hands cause we’ve both said that we’re down to do it,” Thompson said in response to a question from a fan.

Kel expressed a similar sentiment in a Buzzfeed interview from March. “The conversations have started,” he said. “There’s something in the water, everything’s coming back. It will definitely be awesome and there was a meeting! They’re just working everything out contractually, so just keep your ears to the streets.”

It might sound like a silly idea to us olds, but the younger generations have ride hard for Good Burger. Ariana Grande remains a huge fan, per a recent oral history of the movie, while Tyler, the Creator is known to have a poster for the movie hanging above his bed. Endorsements from either of them would be enough to boost the film’s box office, and, hey, it’s not like there isn’t plenty of economic commentary to be made about a pair of 40-year olds still jockeying the register at a fast food restaurant.
