Kendrick Lamar’s “King Kunta” works surprisingly well with the Seinfeld theme
As soon as it dropped, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly album started earning rave reviews from all sorts of places, including The A.V. Club. And any success will lead to mash-ups and remixes, but it’s unlikely that anyone predicted that the gifted rapper’s song “King Kunta” would work so well with the “bom bom chicka” theme song to Seinfeld. Here’s the original song, with its own funk-influenced bass line:
That minimal backing was enough to spark a connection for Jack Dudley, who recognized that another well known riff could fit in just as easily. He then produced “To Pimp A Seinfeld,” which uses the familiar bops and bwadda bwomp womps of the beloved sitcom’s theme in place of the usual notes. And, of course, that led to a music video composed of Seinfeld GIFs getting down to Lamar’s dope rhymes, below.
