That documentary that has Kevin Spacey so worked up is finally airing in the U.S. Spacey Unmasked, which aired earlier this week on the U.K.’s Channel 4, will premiere on May 13 on Investigation Discovery (the go-to destination for exploitative true crime content). The doc delves into Spacey’s history as well as the accusations against him, featuring interviews with several of Spacey’s accusers. Per a press release from ID, Spacey Unmasked “unpacks the dangerous power dynamic within the entertainment industry that allowed for these men’s stories to previously go unheard—and the impact that had on their lives.”

Spacey Unmasked chronicles testimony from men in the US and the UK spanning nearly the entirety of Spacey’s career—from experiences by actors and employees during his tenure at the Old Vic Theater in London to accounts of behavior on the sets of his television and film projects,” reads the synopsis. “The documentary offers emotional insight into these experiences, featuring powerful interviews with men who previously have not gone on the record; ranging from an extra on the set of one of Spacey’s most popular television shows to several men, from young actors to ex-Marines, who encountered Spacey while trying to get their start in Hollywood. Spacey Unmasked additionally features access to Randall Fowler, Spacey’s older brother, who offers insight into their tumultuous childhood.”

The trailer for the documentary asserts that Spacey took advantage of his fame to hurt others, while by the same token, his fame and influence protected him from the consequences of his actions. “He wasn’t responsible with that power. He used it like a weapon,” says one accuser. Others admit that fear of being blacklisted in the entertainment industry, or fear of not being believed, made them hesitant to come forward with their stories.

Last year, Spacey was cleared of all charges pertaining to several allegations of assault in the U.K. spanning from 2005 to 2013. In 2022, he was found not liable in a U.S. civil case pertaining to allegations made by the actor Anthony Rapp in regards to an incident Rapp claimed occurred in 1986, when he was underage. Despite numerous accusations, Spacey has never been found guilty of sexual assault in a court of law. Ahead of the airing of Spacey Unmasked on Channel 4, Spacey protested the documentary on Twitter/X, complaining that he had not been given the time or information to adequately respond to the allegations. He further used the platform to undermine the credibility of one of the accusers and gave an in-depth interview with U.K. tabloid journalist Dan Wootoon. “Each time I have been given the time and a proper forum to defend myself, the allegations have failed under scrutiny and I have been exonerated,” Spacey wrote. “Channel 4 and @RoastBeefTV may find themselves ‘speechless’, but I no longer will be.”
