Kevin Spacey to play a cult leader in HBO series
HBO—the Studio 54 of television—is clearly intent on rebuilding its reputation as the destination network for original dramas, today adding the Kevin Spacey-starring The Crux to an already-promising slate of in-development shows. It’s a major victory for HBO, who won out over both FX and Showtime to claim the series about a charismatic cult leader (Spacey) who oversees the operations of a high-profile, worldwide, multi-billion-dollar cult based in L.A. There’s not much else to go on as of yet, but how long until we can start saying this show is obviously really about Scientology, and then getting angry e-mails from Scientologists about how it’s a religion and not a cult?
