Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele could release a Jim Jarmusch-style film where they talk about Liam Neesons for 90 minutes and people would probably watch it. (We would.) But being “ambitious” and “creative” and all, the duo has bigger plans, as detailed in a recent EW interview.
First of all, speaking of Key & Peele spinoffs, Key says that they are currently negotiating with Paramount to make a Mr. Garvey movie, based on their viral hit sketch about an inner-city teacher substituting at a suburban high school. This inverted take on Dangerous Minds is currently being written by two Key & Peele writers, or, as Key says, “they’re not penning it as we speak — it’s getting there.”
Then there’s the Police Academy reboot that’s been aimlessly wandering around Hollywood for the past few years. Key and Peele are now apparently producing the film, with The Mindy Project’s Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen taking over script-writing duties from David Diamond and David Weissman. At this point, Key and Peele haven’t made a decision about starring in the movie, although Peele considers it a possibility: “Is Key & Peele a distraction from Police Academy? We’ll figure it out,” he says. “Either way, we’ll make the best call for the movie.”
Finally, Peele says he’s working on a horror movie—not a comedy-horror movie, a horror movie—with Darko Entertainment, the same company that produced last year’s Hell Baby (and, uh, Donnie Darko). “I’m a big fan of horror movies. Rosemary’s Baby, Stepford Wives—I’m sort of taking a lead from that genre of film. It’ll be, just, very cool,” Peele says.
