Key & Peele’s Mr. Garvey to get the feature film treatment

Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key are making a second movie: Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has preemptively bought up Substitute Teacher, a pitch to turn the popular recurring sketch from Key & Peele into a feature film. Mr. Garvey has become one of the show’s most popular characters, up there with Obama’s anger translator Luther.

Key and Peele will produce and star, and Key & Peele writers Rich Talarico and Alex Rubens will write the script for the film. As implied in the title, the film will be built around Key’s character Mr. Garvey, a substitute teacher used to teaching in the inner city who suddenly finds himself in a high school full of white suburban teens. Peele will play a rival teacher in their high school, fighting to become the students’ favorite.

Meanwhile, Key and Peele’s first joint film project Keanu—about a pair of friends who pose as drug dealers in order to find their lost cat—is slated to start production this spring.
