Key & Peele showrunners developing old-guy buddy comedy for ABC

According to Deadline, former Key & Peele executive producers/showrunners Ian Roberts and Jay Martel have sold a pitch to ABC for a show titled The Romeos. Rather than a reference to a group of ill-fated Italian loverboys, the name is apparently an acronym for “Retired Older Men Eating Out,” and the show reportedly has “a Grumpy Old Men vibe.” It focuses on two 65-year-old neighbors who decide to “take full advantage of their second acts,” even though they both dislike each other. Given the title, we assume their plan involves a lot of going out to eat.

Roberts and Martel worked on all five seasons of Key & Peele, and Roberts was a founding member of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Together, they also wrote Get Hard and Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas, so their careers seem to have covered a lot of bases. Whether The Romeos will be more like Key & Peele or Get Hard remains to be seen, though.
