Kim Gordon, Yoko Ono, Courtney Love, and more help launch online art school for girls
Inspired by online education sites like Khan Academy, a group of artists and educators is launching an online art school for teenage girls. Like Khan, the School For Doodle will provide free educational content designed to encourage creativity and confidence in its high-school-age audience, all in the face of declining art education funds nationwide.
Currently two-thirds of the way towards its $75,000 Kickstarter goal, the School has become a cause celebré, as the faculty includes famous names like Alice Waters, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Le Tigre’s J.D. Samson, conceptual artist John Baldessari, and teen girl favorite Salman Rushdie. Many more celebs have already contributed artwork and lent support to the Kickstarter effort, including Yoko Ono, Natasha Lyonne, members of Pussy Riot, Teen Feminist blogger Jules Spector, Lili Taylor, Courtney Love, Sarah Silverman, and Arianna Huffington.
Besides online lessons from adult artists, the site will also allow peer-to-peer sharing of projects, plus the occasional live online lesson, and off-line field trip. Assuming it meets its Kickstarter goal (which seems like a safe bet at this point), School For Doodle plans to launch in late 2014.
