Kimya Dawson makes a kids record (on purpose this time)
Cutesy indie rocker Kimya Dawson is looking to "extend her Juno buzz" (those are Billboard's words, not ours) with a new children's record called Alphabutt. Song titles include "The Alphabutt Song," "Seven Hungry Tigers," "Little Monster Babies," "Wiggle My Tooth" and "Pee Pee in the Potty," and collaborators include former Third Eye Blind guitarist Kevin Cadoga. (Please, don't everyone get excited at once!) There's also a bunch of crazy, screaming kids on the record, definitely "not those little fake, smiley faced, typical kid backup singers," Dawson tells Billboard. "They're screaming and saying whatever they want. It's how kids want to do music, not like when they're in school taking lessons and all sitting in rows on bleachers."
Now some of us beg to be sterilized when confronted with screaming tots at the grocery store, but maybe others are on the board for this, especially if those others have their own screaming tots at home pounding the pavement for some entertainment. If that's the case, there's more good news: Dawson might also be working with Sesame Street soon. The singer/songwriter tells Billboard that a call from the producers of the popular children's public TV series has been one of the most welcome opportunities in the wake of her involvement with the chart-topping Juno soundtrack album.
