Kristen Bell criticizes another princess in blatant display of pro-Frozen propaganda
The trailer for the Wreck-It Ralph sequel makes it seem like all of the Disney princesses are friends, but now Kristen Bell—Frozen’s Princess Anna—has pointed out that some of those old princess stories haven’t exactly aged well. Specifically, she told Parents that she loves reading to her daughters every night, but she just can’t sit back and enjoy the story of Snow White anymore. Bell says she feels compelled to unpack the story’s problems with her daughters, like how Snow White accepts the poisoned apple without really questioning why this old witch wants her to eat it or where the old witch got it in the first place.
Bell says her kids know not to take food from strangers, but there’s an even more important point that she makes after reading the story: “Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission?” Oh, it definitely is weird, and it’s a big plot point that’s hard to get around without acknowledging how gross it seems these days. Meanwhile, part of Princess Anna’s story in Frozen is realizing that true love isn’t necessarily this magical thing that you’ll discover in an instant and will solve all of your problems, but the Parents story doesn’t say if Bell uses the questionable content in Snow White as a plug for her movie (we would if we were her, if only because we’d constantly be bragging about it if we were in a movie as big as Frozen).
Either way, this seems like good parenting even if it’s not necessarily good promotion for the Disney princess brand, and Bell says she’s using the stuff she’s learned while reading children’s books to write a book of her own.
