Ever since scoring unexpected success with Bridesmaids and thereby paving the way for women to at last participate in the entertainment industry, Kristen Wiig has been choosing her projects very carefully—which is a nice way of saying she dropped out of the ensemble comedy What To Expect When You’re Expecting as soon as she realized it was beneath her. But now she’s put her newfound cachet to good use on her longtime passion project Imogene, a film she’s been readying for a couple of years now with American Splendor directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. The dark comedy stars Wiig as a playwright who pretends to kill herself to get the attention of an ex-boyfriend, only to wind up in the custody of her estranged, gambling-addicted mother in Atlantic City, a premise that Wiig described to The Playlist back in March as “kind of a coming-home story.” Variety now reports that it’s scheduled to shoot in August before Wiig is due to return to Saturday Night Live—and considering the canyon-wide chasm between Wiig’s likably understated comic presence on the big screen and her grating SNL work, it’s totally fine if the Imogene production runs long, really.
