Kurt Cobain’s 1985 punk demo streaming online for the first time ever
The demo recordings of Kurt Cobain’s pre-Nirvana band, Fecal Matter, are now available online. Founded by an 18-year-old Cobain in 1985, Fecal Matter featured the Melvins’ Dale Crover on bass, and recorded its demo, Illiteracy Will Prevail, on a four-track recorder. The 13 guitar-heavy and insanely abrasive punk songs aren’t exactly Smithsonian-quality material, but they helped contribute to the formation of Nirvana: After Fecal Matter broke up, Krist Novoselic checked out Illiteracy Will Prevail, liked it, and ended up forming a band with Cobain. The rest, as they say, is rock ’n’ roll history.
