Kurt Vonnegut dies at 84

Kurt Vonnegut's 14 novels established a strange and memorable idiom of their own, and this is a sad day for anyone who falls back on phrases like "so it goes" in daily parlance, or knows the best way to draw an asshole. Vonnegut has died at 84 of brain injuries suffered during a recent fall. Vonnegut was a harsh and incisive satirist, yet his wordplay and sense of humor often reached escapist heights, inventing new countries, planets, religions, and dialects in the process. So, though many will be mourning him today, it's tempting to lift this from his last novel, Timequake: "We are here on earth to fart around, and don't let anyone tell you different."

For those who loved Vonnegut's crude and hysterical drawings, his website has this tribute. NPR's running a collection of his radio appearances, and The New York Times has a pretty thorough obit.
