La La Land and Moonlight lead the 2017 Golden Globes nominations

It’s been a good 12 hours for La La Land. After the Ryan Gosling-Emma Stone musical cleaned up at the Critics Choice Awards last night, it went on to collect the most Golden Globe nominations of any film, seven in total, when those were announced by Anna Kendrick, Laura Dern, and Don Cheadle this morning. Damien Chazelle’s homage to old Hollywood received a nod for Best Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy; Stone and Gosling each got recognition in their respective acting categories; and Chazelle was nominated in Best Director and Best Screenplay. In both those categories, he’ll go up against Barry Jenkins for Moonlight, which collected six nods, and Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester By The Sea, which garnered five. Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea are both competing for Best Motion Picture, Drama alongside Hacksaw Ridge, Hell Or High Water, and Lion, all of which are demonstrating a certain awards season staying power.

Still, the Globes’ picks solidify the three-way race that has been brewing between La La Land, Moonlight, and Manchester, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association only made a couple of surprising choices, including selecting Tom Ford as one of their five Best Director contenders for Nocturnal Animals. (Perhaps the members just really liked the perfume.) The organization also groveled at the feet of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille winner, Meryl Streep, giving her a nod for Best Actress, Musical Or Comedy for Florence Foster Jenkins, which is also up for musical or comedy best picture. As for what got left out: There was no love for Martin Scorsese’s Silence, and Tom Hanks wasn’t represented in Best Actor for Sully.

In the TV categories, American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson dominated yet another set of nominations, scoring five, while The Night Manager followed close behind with four. Outside of limited series, the HFPA tipped its proverbial hat to newcomers The Crown, This Is Us, and Westworld. The Globes air January 8 on NBC with Jimmy Fallon hosting.
