La La Land and Stranger Things win big at Producers Guild Awards

Though the actors are taking the stage tonight for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, everybody in The Industry knows that the real people who make movies happen are the producers. So, in a way, the Producers Guild Awards are the biggest and most important honors of the whole awards season—especially if you are a producer. Also, the Producers Guild used to be good at predicting the Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards, with the organization’s eight-year streak broken by Spotlight winning instead of The Big Short in 2016. This year, the PGA’s top film award went to La La Land, which either means that it will also win the Oscar and the PGA’s streak will start over, or that it will lose the Oscar and the PGA will continue a streak of incorrect Oscar predictions. So many possibilities!

Aside from La La Land, other films honored at the PGAs include Zootopia, which won the prize for best animated film, and O.J.: Made In America, which won the top documentary prize. On the TV side, Stranger Things won best drama series, Atlanta won best comedy series, and The People V. O.J. Simpson won for long-form television, and Making A Murderer won for non-fiction television.
