La La Land waltzes away with the most Critics’ Choice Awards nominations

Damien Chazelle’s romantic musical La La Land has been considered an awards favorite since it debuted at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year. Now it’s starting to make good on that promise by garnering 12 nominations from the Critics’ Choice Awards, including ones for Best Picture and Best Director. The movie’s singing and dancing stars, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, were also honored in the actress and actor categories, respectively. Moonlight—which had a great night earlier this week at the Gotham Awards—ended up with 10 nods. Arrival, Denis Villeneuve’s smarty pants sci fi film, racked up the same amount.

We would also be remiss not to note that—because the Critics’ Choice Awards have categories specifically related to action movies, and it was a pretty weak year for female performances in those—both Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad are represented here. You can see the full list of nominations below. The trophies will be handed out at a ceremony hosted by T.J. Miller December 11.
