Reminiscent of the recent back-and-forth over “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “Perform This Way,” Lady Gaga’s representatives have once more ensured the solemnity and integrity of Lady Gaga’s image by winning an injunction against the popular children’s website Moshi Monsters, and preventing them from parodying her with a cartoon named Lady Goo Goo. The character’s videos (since removed from the site, though they live on in YouTube copies like the one below) featured a blonde baby wearing oversized, ostentatious black sunglasses while singing simplistic pop songs with lyrics like, “My stroller's pretty and my diapers are silk / I throw my toys out if I don't get my milk,” and, “My crazy outfits seem to shock”—a combination of spoiled arrogance masquerading as simplistic empowerment messages and tediously self-aware “outrageousness” that Lady Gaga herself said would “likely cause consumer confusion.” While the founder of Moshi Monsters’ parent company Mind Candy called the ruling a “dangerous precedent” to set for future cover bands and song parodists, the important thing is that Lady Gaga will no longer be made to look ridiculous or like a big baby.
