Larger Than Life

Larger Than Life

Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers is updated with a '90s twist in this new comedy starring Bill Murray as a motivational speaker who inherits an elephant from his deceased father. While it may sound like pairing Murray with a pachyderm couldn't fail, Larger Than Life suffers from a stifling air of blandness. Murray's character seems like a processed version of his more memorable past roles, and while his costar is appealingly soulful-looking, a lethargic elephant just doesn't have the sort of cinematic appeal that a hyperactive chimp brings to just about any movie. Matthew McConaughey's embarrassing appearance as a high-strung, paranoid trucker fails to fill this void, while second-billed Janeane Garofalo barely appears at all. Percentage of jokes involving the inappropriate placement of an elephant in human society: 99. Percentage of jokes involving the inappropriate placement of an electric prod to a human groin: 1.
