Larry Wilmore to host this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Washington D.C. press corps members and politicos are going back to the Comedy Central well to find a host for their annual exercise in pretending they don’t all secretly hate each other, the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. Variety is reporting that The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore will be following in Stephen Colbert’s (and Joel McHale’s, and Conan O’Brien’s, and Cecily Strong’s) footsteps, wading into the murky satirical trenches to find the exact right balance of “mean, but not too mean” to avoid getting attacked by the crowd and fed into the wide, ever-hungry maw of Antonin Scalia.

Besides having to live up to the precedent set by his 11:30 PM timeslot predecessor—whose 2006 to-his-face roasting of George W. Bush has long since entered the pantheon of powerful, courageous political satire—Wilmore will also need to prepare himself to endure Barack Obama’s final chance to get his post-presidency stand-up career well and truly off the ground.
