Late-night hosts pay tribute to David Bowie

As fans continue to mourn David Bowie, who died Sunday at the age of 69, tributes and other remembrances have also poured out from the rock ’n’ roll icon’s friends. The hosts of late night paid their respects Monday night with words and music. On The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon took a moment to remember the “mad genius,” with whom he occasionally exchanged jokes via email. Fallon lauded Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, urging viewers to listen to it and thank the artist for his considerable cultural contributions.

Over at TBS, Conan O’Brien also celebrated Bowie’s humor and talent, describing him as a “phenomenal musician” who was both fun and funny. O’Brien showed a reel of clips from interviews with Bowie, including one visit that resulted in the two singing O’Brien’s praises.

The Daily Show’s Moment Of Zen was a Moment Of Bowie, as host Trevor Noah introduced a clip of the artist sharing some stirring advice to viewers. (The clip isn’t available independent of the episode, which you can find here.)

“The other thing I would say is that if you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth, and when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”

Finally, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert featured a performance by musical guests EL VY (The National’s Matt Beringer and Menomena’s Brent Knopf) and Late Show band Stay Human, who joined forces for a cover of Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”.
