Late Show or not, Stephen Colbert was leaving The Colbert Report

David Letterman be damned: Stephen Colbert says he was going to quit The Colbert Report even before the late-night host left The Late Show. As Colbert tells Jerry Seinfeld in the latest episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, he was “ready to stop,” and he was “going to stop whether or not [he got the new job],” saying “the Letterman thing fell into my lap.”

As Vulture points out, this isn’t the first time Colbert has talked about his exit from The Report. In an interview he did with Judd Apatow for the director’s Sick In The Head, Colbert said that he doesn’t know if he could have done The Colbert Report much longer than he did, saying he soured on the whole concept of punditry. As he puts it, “I no longer respect my model… you have to be invested in your model. And I really am not. I can’t watch that stuff anymore.”
