In this day and age, no beloved television program can ever truly die. A limited series like Big Little Lies can have a satisfying ending, and people will be clamoring for more. The women behind Gilmore Girls certainly know this new landscape, having gotten their own revival on Netflix. And, indeed, A Year In The Life ended on a major pregnancy-related cliffhanger, leaving a return to Stars Hollow very much a possibility—one which the streaming service is keen to make a reality. But now Lauren Graham—Lorelai herself—is tempering expectations. “If it all existed in a vacuum, I would play that character until my dying day,” she said at a recent event, according to TV Line. “Now it’s become what could we do with this story that is satisfying, that is worth continuing. I don’t know if there is a need to do more. I wouldn’t want it to feel like we overstayed our welcome.”
Graham’s storytelling concerns are certainly valid. Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino used the revival to build to the final four words she had always planned for her series. Who’s to say anything after that utterance will be worth the wait? But this also may be hedging due scheduling conflicts. Sherman-Palladino’s new series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel just got a two-season pickup at Amazon, Graham has a pilot on Fox, and Alexis Bledel is on The Handmaid’s Tale.
