Laurie Metcalf takes the lead in ABC's first look at The Conners

The Roseanne-less Roseanne spin-off The Conners is staying weirdly mum on plot details, but a new teaser posted to the show’s Twitter account offers a teensy peek into whatever ABC is cooking up. The good news? It’s heavy on the weary, neurotic Aunt Jackie, played here by the hilarious (and Oscar-nominated) Laurie Metcalf. It’s also playing fast and loose with the question of just how it plans to handle the loss of Roseanne Barr, who will have no involvement in the spin-off after her racist tweets got the revival cancelled. “There’s one thing on everyone’s mind,” the cheeky narrator intones. Jackie replies, “There’s no place for the corn holders.” It’s an interesting approach, especially if Barr wasn’t lying when she claimed her character dies of an “opioid overdose.” We’ll find out when The Conners debuts on October 16.
