Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison for failing to pay almost one million dollars in back taxes and fines. Though her attorney says Hill paid her overdue taxes prior to today’s hearing, it apparently was too little, too late. Following her prison sentence, the former Fugee will have to remain under house arrest for an additional three months. Hill had faced a maximum of one year in prison on three separate charges.
Hill failed to pay taxes on her income from 2005 to 2007 and has been struggling to pay back the money and deal with the IRS ever since. Late last month, Hill signed a deal with Sony that netted her a reported $1 million for just five songs. As part of that deal, Hill released one of those songs, knowingly titled “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix),” online over the weekend.
