Prince’s death continues to draw out tributes from every corner of the musical world. Given that Coachella is still happening right now in the deserts of Southern California, it’s no surprise that the festival has become a hotbed of artists—from all walks of lyrical life—paying homage to the 57-year-old artist and the way he inspired their work.
Last night saw Sufjan Stevens, Gallant, and LCD Soundsystem join their voices to the growing chorus of Prince covers spreading across the Coachella Valley, with the “Weight In Gold” singer joining Stevens during his Friday night set, busting out the vocals on “Purple Rain.” Gallant also devoted some of his own show, earlier in the day, to a performance of “Diamonds And Pearls,” with his frequent collaborator, Jhené Aiko.
LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, meanwhile, dropped a cover of “Controversy” into his headlining set. He also devoted some of his stage time to playing the video of Prince’s cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”—from the artist’s own Coachella set back in 2008—in its entirety for the waiting crowd. Coachella ends tomorrow, with sets from artists like Sia, Major Lazer, and The 1975 still to come.
