We already knew that Brie Larson’s ‘90s-set Captain Marvel movie will bring Nick Fury back to the MCU for the first time since his dramatic Helicarrier rescue in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but he won’t be the only Marvel friend coming back. According to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios has quietly announced that Lee Pace, Clark Gregg, and Djimon Hounsou will also be appearing in Captain Marvel, with Pace and Hounsou reprising their Guardians Of The Galaxy villains Ronan The Accuser and Koreth. Gregg will once again by playing Agent Phil Coulson, who has been a main character on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. for years but hasn’t appeared in an MCU movie since he was killed by Loki all the way back in The Avengers.
This means that Captain Marvel will be making good use of both its prequel setting and its title character’s alien-based backstory, so it has a chance to make some easy connections to the rest of the MCU. In the comics, Carol Danvers gets her powers after meeting a guy named Mar-Vell, who happens to be a Kree, which is the same race as Ronan The Accuser from Guardians Of The Galaxy. Plus, since this takes place in the ‘90s, it’ll be a few decades before Coulson gets stabbed (though it would break the canon a little if he learned too much about the Kree).
Captain Marvel officially began production recently, even though we’ve already seen set photos of Larson in a weirdly green suit, and the movie will be in theaters next March.
