Lego adds Scooby-Doo to its list of licensed playsets

Lego, the multimedia brand that occasionally also makes plastic toys, has announced that Scooby-Doo will be the latest franchise to receive its profit-granting touch. The Denmark-based toy company will start producing minifigures and playsets for the long-running cartoon franchiseincluding the members of Mystery Inc. and the titular canine, long considered pop culture’s most erudite crime-solving doglater this year. The company will also be working with its partners at Warner Bros. to produce the inevitable 22-minute Lego Scooby-Doo animated special intended to promote the set.

While not possessing the juggernaut cachet of other Lego partners like Star Wars and Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo has done an admirable job of keeping itself in the popular consciousness for 47 years, with the popular Cartoon Network series Mystery Incorporated and the upcoming Be Cool, Scooby-Doo both keeping the franchise fresh. It seems fitting, then, for the characters and their weird world of elaborate, hologram-wielding con men to be immortalized in Legoeven if we can’t seem to remember the part of the old cartoons where Fred or Daphne would solve the crime by ripping the culprit’s monster head off and slapping a human one back on the gleaming, exposed yellow neck stump.
