Leonardo DiCaprio is gunning for an Oscar in The Revenant trailer

The trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s followup to Birdman, The Revenant, is here, and it’s heavy on both action and Leonardo DiCaprio panting. DiCaprio stars as Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who vows revenge after Tom Hardy’s John Fitzgerald leaves him for dead following a good old-fashioned bear mauling.

The film—adapted from the book by Michael Punke—has been in the works since the book was published in 2003. Though the rights were snapped up right away, the film languished in pre-production, despite initially having Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role. Alejandro González Iñárritu came aboard as director in 2011, but filming didn’t get underway until April 2014.

The Revenant also stars Ex Machina’s Domhnall Gleeson as Andrew Henry, who, according to Wikipedia, was a fur trader with a “reputation for honesty.” DiCaprio also brings his old buddy Lukas Haas along for the ride on the frontier, probably so the two could make “fur trapper” jokes.

The Revenant will open in theaters sometime in December.
