For fans of Looney Tunes, Bugs Bunny, Merrie Melodies, and animation in general, the name Chuck Jones likely elicits a wave of fond nostalgia. Among the stable of Tunes directors, Jones’ work was the most inventive, the most auteur-like, and often the funniest of the lot. In his decades-spanning career, Jones gave the world Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner, Marvin The Martian, and a strangely endearing heart-shaped Sasquatch monster, as well as some of the most iconic Bugs Bunny shorts. In this short from the Every Frame A Painting series, creator Tony Zhou breaks from his usual format (no singular explorations of shot technique here) to examine Jones’ evolution as an artist and how his particular sensibilities formed, and in some cases re-shaped, Warner Brothers’ stable of classic cartoon characters.
