Let’s pay tribute to this video tribute to Pixar’s tributes to classic films
Pixar has created its fair share of indelible images over the past few decades. From the first sighting of “the claw” to Up’s heartbreaking montage of a life well lived, the acclaimed animation house has been cranking out iconic moments at a rapid-fire pace, cementing its place in the halls of movie history. But, like any visionary, Pixar owes a great deal to the artists and filmmakers who came before it, and keen viewers have likely noticed that they’ve been paying their respects to their cinematic forebears for years. Now, Madrid-based video editor Jorge Ruiz has created a beautiful video compilation of these nods to classic films, placing Pixar moments side-by-side with the scenes that inspired them. Some homages are more obvious, like Buzz and Woody’s Indiana Jones-aping ball run in the original Toy Story, while others are a little more subtle, like Toy Story 2’s many shot-for-shot salutes to Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Rear Window. It makes for a brief but fun trip through the history of Hollywood that serves as a reminder that inspiration and appropriation are a crucial part of the artistic process, even for the geniuses at Pixar.
