Let's Get Excited About HBO Comedies That Aren't Entourage!

A few weeks back, before the season premiere of The Sopranos, HBO aired one of their patented "Look how weighty everything we do is" promos–those lengthy, super-serious ads meant to convey to viewers that they're not just watching TV, they're watching HBO, dammit, and HBO might be the single most important invention man has ever created. This particular promo featured a slow montage of clips from their upcoming 2007 series like Big Love, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and a few others all set to a soundtrack of The Fray's "Over My Head." Overall message: It's not TV, it's TV with whiny background music in the ads. (You can watch a bite-sized sample of the ad here.) One of the clips wedged between the fancy jump cuts and endless "over my head/ over my head"s was from the new series by the hilarious, dry, comedy-with-music act Flight Of The Conchords. And if the Conchords live act, and the Fray-free trailer below are any indication, the series should give HBO at least one deserving reason to pat themselves on the back in future annoyingly self-important promos:
