Lifetime cancels The Lottery, rips up its ticket in anger

After failing to pull in the necessary number of viewers to finally earn Lifetime the respect its colleagues at Bravo and Syfy get, the network has decided to cancel The Lottery, its attempt at a futuristic sci-fi-ish conspiracy thriller. This comes from Deadline, which reports that the show managed to pull in 1.1 million viewers back in July, but it has since dipped down to an average of 700,000 per episode. Meanwhile, Devious Maids has been getting more than double that for its second season, so maybe The Lottery just didn’t have enough of that devious maid action that Lifetime’s audience apparently loves. Or maybe people tuned in initially because they expected the show to contains hints for winning the lottery, but instead they got a chilling tale of conformity gone mad and a generation of women who suddenly stop being able to have children—which is, admittedly, kind of a bummer. This isn’t the end of Lifetime’s push for serious dramas (that don’t involve recently deceased actresses), as it still has reality dating show satire Un-Real and its Omen sequel series in the works.
