No longer content to let Netflix have all the critically acclaimed, women-led Jenji Kohan shows—what with its GLOWs and its Orange Are The New Blacks—Lifetime has now grabbed a Kohan series of its own. Deadline reports that the network has acquired American Princess, a new hourlong drama about a woman who runs away from her old life to serve as a “wench-in-waiting” at a Renaissance Faire.
The series was written and created by Orange Is The New Black actress (and Ronna & Beverly star) Jamie Denbo, with Kohan and OITNB’s Tara Herrmann producing. Lifetime has ordered ten episodes of the show, which will follow Amanda, a New York socialite who runs away to the Ren Faire after her she catches her fiancé cheating on her. (Eagle-eyed TV fans will note that this is pretty much Rachel’s plot from the early episodes of Friends, except with giant turkey legs thankfully replacing coffee.) Princess will serve as yet another addition to Lifetime’s growing slate of scripted content, which also includes UnReal, Mary Kills People, and the upcoming psychological thriller, You.
