Lifetime is taking on R. Kelly with a docuseries and movie about abuse allegations

When Lifetime sets its sights on someone, it’s pretty clear where public opinion of them has gone. Either you’re a big celebrity with shocking secrets that need to be exposed in a fun way, or you’re a famously bad person with shocking secrets that need to be exposed in a harrowing way. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network is now developing two projects about R. Kelly, and in case you can’t guess which way they’re going to go, THR helpfully notes that they’ll both be part of Lifetime’s Stop Violence Against Women Campaign—which looks to “bring awareness to abusive behaviors.”

Last summer, R. Kelly was accused of keeping young women in an abusive “cult” where he allegedly dictates their every move and prevents them from contacting their friends and family—or anyone, really. Lifetime’s attempt to shed more light on the allegations will involve a documentary series and a feature-length movie, both of which will “tell the stories of women who have fallen under the toxic spell of the controversial R&B singer.” The docuseries will feature interviews with “survivors and people from R. Kelly’s inner circle” as they detail how his “genre-defining career and playboy lifestyle became riddle with rumors of abuse, predatory behavior, and pedophilia.”

THR has fewer details about the feature-length film, bit will be written by Barbara Marshall and will most likely be a dramatization of the allegations that have been brought against R. Kelly.
