Lifetime renews UnREAL for a third gleefully amoral season

In a scenario that, if it happened on an episode of UnREAL, would likely leave someone with an irreversible moral emptiness in the wake of some dignity-sucking Machiavellian scheme, Variety reports that Lifetime has renewed its Peabody Award-winning reality-show satire for a third season ahead of the season two premiere. In reality, though, it seems that the network just thinks that UnREAL is really good. Lifetime programming head Liz Gateley says in a statement:

UnREAL is that rare series that redefines a network. It not only reflects culture, but pushes culture forward by creating television’s first female antihero. The overwhelming fan and critical reaction set the bar incredibly high, but the writers and executive producing team, coupled with the outstanding performances by Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer, have taken the second season to even greater creative heights.

For what it’s worth, The A.V. Club agrees with this assessment, ranking UnREAL No. 9 on our list of the best TV series of 2015. You can see for yourself when the show returns for a second season next Monday, June 6 on Lifetime; UnREAL’s 10-episode third season will bow sometime next year.
