Lifetime’s ill-fated Aaliyah biopic in peril following its star’s exit

Lifetime’s planned Aaliyah biopic is in danger following its star’s exit. Zendaya Coleman was set to play the titular singer in Aaliyah: Princess Of R&B, but she’s know left the project, saying, “Production-wise, (it) wasn’t all the way there.” That’s probably a nice way for Coleman to say she’d stepped into a PR nightmare after Aaliyah’s family came out against it, complaining that Lifetime wouldn’t do the singer justice, and trying to block any of her music from appearing in the film. Some Aaliyah fans also voiced anti-Coleman sentiments online, saying the light-skinned Disney Channel star wasn’t black enough to play the “Rock The Boat” singer.

Lifetime says production for Aaliyah: Princess Of R&B is now “on hold,” meaning its scheduled summer shoot probably won’t be happening.
