Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V is really coming out this year

Lil Wayne’s album Tha Carter V has been stuck in limbo for just about four years, with a contract dispute between Lil Wayne and his old label Cash Money Records keeping the album stuck on the proverbial shelf. Earlier this year, though, Universal (Cash Money’s parent company) decided to quit messing around and settled a lawsuit that Lil Wayne had filed, giving him $10 million, releasing him from his Cash Money contract, and giving him the freedom to finally release Tha Carter V. Now, after all these years, the album is really coming out.

Hot 97 believes the album will be released on September 21, but so far there hasn’t been an official announcement. A new Lil Wayne interview with Billboard notes that Tha Carter V is “slated for release this fall,” but it sounds like a specific release date is harder to nail down at the moment because Lil Wayne is still actively remixing and rewriting some of his tracks. Specifically, there’s a song about an incident when Lil Wayne shot himself in the chest with a gun he found in his mother’s house when he was 12, and while Wayne had previously called it an accident, he has added a new verse that says it was a suicide attempt—and there are new lyrics he just added that reference the deaths of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade.

So we don’t know exactly when Tha Carter V is coming, but it is coming.
