Lily Gladstone’s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated performance in the haunting tale of a real-life murder is, as it happens, another haunting tale of real-life murder. Under The Bridge, in which she stars opposite Riley Keough, is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book of the same name which explores the murder of a young girl in Godfrey’s childhood home of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The miniseries, which premieres on Hulu on April 17, explores the women’s different approaches to getting involved in the case.

Under The Bridge is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home,” reads a synopsis of the series. “Through the eyes of Godfrey (Riley Keough) and a local police officer (Lily Gladstone), the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder—revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.”

Not unlike the Amy Adams-starring Sharp Objects, Keough’s Godfrey is presented as something of a prodigal daughter returning to her hometown to capitalize on their tragedy. But the writer can get closer to the young “Bic girls”—a term that local police have given to the youths “because we’re disposable,” one of them tells Godfrey—than a cop can. “This is a tale of horror and wonder, of innocence and beauty, violence and sin,” Keough narrates over the trailer. “This story would haunt the island for years to come. It forever changed a fact that young girls were the ones we were supposed to protect, not be protected from.”

Under The Bridge is not just a true crime story, but a story about who gets to tell the story. According to Entertainment Weekly, the series also incorporates flashbacks of the Virk family adapted from Manjit Virk’s memoir Reena: A Father’s Story. With Reena’s death, others are left to make sense of her story—her father, Godfrey, the girls who bullied her, the team producing the show—and the audience is left to discern what’s “true” about this true crime.

Under The Bridge, adapted by Quinn Shephard, also stars Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Izzy G., Aiyana Goodfellow, Ezra Faroque Khan, and Archie Panjabi.
