Lily James to play young Meryl Streep in the Mamma Mia! sequel

Today, in setting yourself up for a needlessly difficult series of comparisons: Baby Driver star Lily James has signed on for the Mamma Mia! sequel, Here We Go Again, where she’ll play a younger version of Meryl Streep. Per Deadline, James has been cast as “Young Donna,” the earlier version of Streep’s worldly chanteuse, as she gets into various romantic scrapes with whoever’s stuck playing the younger versions of Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.

Here We Go Again has already confirmed that much of the original movie’s cast—including Streep, Amanda Seyfried, and Christine Baranski—will return for the sequel, while Ol Parker, who helmed The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, is set to direct. The new film is expected to extend this unlikely franchise’s dive into ABBA’s musical catalog, while also bringing back some of the first film’s biggest hits.
