One might think that after stretching Suzanne Collins’ bestselling young-adult trilogy into a lucrative cinematic tetralogy, Lionsgate would be satisfied that it had squeezed every bit of narrative (and money) from the pages of The Hunger Games. One would be wrong, though, as according to studio VP Michael Burns, the franchise “will live on and on.” However, future films will probably have to be prequels, for reasons that would constitute spoilers, were they detailed here.
While speaking at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York earlier today, Burns lamented the lack of children killing each other for sport in the final two episodes in the series, Mockingjay—Parts 1 and 2, positing that younger moviegoers yearned for scenes set in the fighting arenas that dominated the first two films. “If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas,” he said. No new Hunger Games films far been officially announced by Lionsgate, but it’s safe to assume that stories could be stitched together from the world-building historical details Collins wove into her books.
