Lisa Simpson tips her cap to Daria Morgendorffer, the Powerpuff Girls
Lisa Simpson has never hesitated to pay loving homage to trailblazing women. On the latest episode of The Simpsons, the pint-sized feminist icon committed to that sentiment, for meta or worse.
In a brief shot Lisa admires a poster hanging over a bed labeled “Cartoon Women’s History.” Underneath the header is a humble timeline of animated cultural staples: Betty Boop, Archie Comics’ Miss Grundy (who was later reimagined in true CW fashion as the younger, hotter music teacher in Riverdale), Daria Morgendorffer, the Powerpuff Girls, and Lisa’s fellow Fox sister, Louise Belcher.
Of course, the internet jumped on the opportunity to do what it does best during moments like these: immediately point out the legions of examples that were (obviously) maliciously overlooked. Wilma Flinstone, Betty Rubble, and Scooby Doo’s Daphne and Velma were among the animated ladies honorably mentioned. Lisa herself deserves a spot on her own tribute. She has an IQ of 159 and is a part of the longest running scripted primetime series in history.
Happy (Cartoon) Women’s History Month!
