Listen to all the generic music from BoJack Horseman’s flashbacks
BoJack Horseman has a wonderful way of establishing place. This season, the show created a whole new subworld within its already intricate and immersive world by taking things under the sea. But in addition to its creativity when it comes to establishing place, BoJack Horseman has its own special way of establishing time. Over the course of the series, there have been flashbacks to the 1980s, the 1990s, and 2007—all very important times in BoJack’s journey.
This season had some very specific 2007 throwbacks. But it’s not enough to just visually take people back in time. On BoJack Horseman, the music reflects the era, too. And someone on the internet has taken it upon themselves to edit together all of BoJack Horseman’s “generic music” used in flashbacks. There’s the generic 1980s new wave song that blares as BoJack cruises down a street lined with a walkman store, a store for just leg warmers, and a billboard warning against Big Brother. Then there’s the generic ‘90s grunge song, which has BoJack rocking along as he drives past a pog place, a record store, and a Got Milk? Billboard.
Then comes 2007 and its far-too-catchy generic 2007 pop song (“Auto-Tuned so all the voices sound weird”), which Princess Carolyn blasts while passing stores for velour track suits, flip phones, and a hair salon called Britney Shears.
